Burton Explorers are celebrating the outstanding achievement of Fraser, who has been awarded the prestigious King’s Scout Award – the highest youth award available in Scouting.
Having started his Scouting journey as a Beaver Scout with Stretton Scout Group, Fraser has progressed through every section of Scouting in Burton, embracing every challenge and opportunity along the way. His commitment, determination and enthusiasm have now earned him a place among the country’s highest-achieving young people, with an invitation to St James’s Palace to receive formal recognition for his achievement.
The King’s Scout Award (KSA) is the pinnacle of youth achievement within Scouting for 16 to 25-year-olds. To achieve the award, participants must complete an extensive programme of personal development, including volunteering, community service, physical activity, skills development, challenging expeditions and a residential experience, while demonstrating leadership, commitment and active participation in Scouting over a sustained period. The award is recognised nationally as a symbol of exceptional dedication, resilience and personal growth.
Alongside achieving the King’s Scout Award, Fraser has also completed his Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, one of the UK’s most respected youth awards. The Gold Award requires participants to undertake volunteering, physical and skills sections, complete both practice and qualifying expeditions, and take part in a residential experience, demanding perseverance, determination and many months of commitment.
Fraser’s King’s Scout Award presentation demonstrated exactly why he is such a deserving recipient. Rather than delivering a traditional presentation, he chose to go far beyond what was required by creating a Netflix-style documentary, filmed and produced by himself. The presentation featured interviews filmed in his family kitchen as Fraser reflected on his Scouting journey, what Scouting has meant to him and the experiences that have shaped him into the young adult he is today.
His documentary explored not only the adventures and challenges he has experienced throughout Scouting, but also the obstacles he has overcome and the personal development he has achieved during his years as a member. It also highlighted his time as a Young Leader, giving back to the very Scout Group that helped begin his own journey, supporting younger members and helping inspire the next generation of Scouts.
The presentation was attended by fellow Explorers, former Explorers, leaders, friends, family and invited guests, including Bruce Field from Staffordshire Scouts. Those present were treated to an engaging, heartfelt and highly professional production that perfectly captured the values of Scouting and the impact it has had on Fraser’s life.
One of the most touching moments came towards the end of the presentation, when Fraser paid tribute to his Grandad, who has supported him from his very first Beaver meeting through to achieving Scouting’s highest honour. Proudly watching from the audience then asked to the front, wearing his own Scout Medal of Merit, it was a fitting reminder of the family support that has helped Fraser achieve so much.
No Fraser presentation would be complete without refreshments, and guests were treated to another outstanding selection from Helen P’s Baked Goods. Those who know Fraser’s mum, Helen, will already appreciate the exceptionally high standard her baking has become renowned for, providing the perfect ending to a memorable evening.
The Burton Explorer leadership team congratulated Fraser on an incredible achievement and thanked him for the commitment, enthusiasm and leadership he has shown throughout his Scouting journey.
Fraser’s story demonstrates exactly what Scouting can offer. From a young Beaver Scout in Stretton to achieving both the King’s Scout Award and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, he has embraced every opportunity, challenged himself and given back through leadership and service.
